Late Policy: Students are allowed 1 additional week to turn in incomplete work that they finish at home. I will assess a percentage based on the completeness of the work on it's due date (50% for a project that is half done) and will re-assess that grade a week later. No penalty for lateness will be assessed, but after the additional week, the grade in Powerschool will remain.
Expectations:
Many students have not had art since lower elementary school, while others have always had art in their schedule. It is important that we meet basic expectations of art making. Generally, a project will take 2 weeks to complete. If you are focused, that means about 10 hours of work. You do not have to be "an artist" to pass, but you do need to put in the time to create and push your work to the highest level you can based on my instruction and your own abilities. If you try, you will not fail! The video below outlines my expectations of a color illustration project where you sketch, draw, erase, color, layer colors, add details like textures and shadows. If you do meet expectations, but finish early, you should do a second drawing on the same topic, OR pick one from pages 177+ in your workbook. 50% of your grade is based on the art we create, the other 50% is based on written work like tests, quizzes, or a research paper. As long as you try you will not fail. You do not need to be "an artist" to pass this class, but you do need to participate. This class is designed for all students to succeed. |
The video above is a basic outline of who I am as your teacher, and my goals for you as an art student. The video below explains how we will use our workbook for art 1 and art 2. You will be provided with one copy.

Assignments:
EVERY MONDAY: Art Quotes. (First 5 minutes of class)
In the middle of your workbook, near page 106, you will find several pages of art quotes. You will read, interpret, and write a response to 1 quote every Monday. When 6 quotes are complete, you will submit your writing for a grade. If you meet the expectations outlined in the video, it is an easy 100%. 3 students will share their written response with the class. Volunteers earn 1 extra credit point to be added to a low graded assignment, (up to 25 points can be awarded in total.) If we do not get 3 volunteers, students will be chosen to share their written response but do not earn extra credit points. Refusal to share can hurt your participation grade. |

Project 1:
Music Illustration Using supplies provided, or your own, you will create an illustration based on a song that has helped you get through this pandemic. It can be of any style. The image must include some text from the song. It does not have to be in English, but it does have to be "school appropriate." Change any "curse words" to symbols like $#&@ like they do in cartoons. Create a sketch first before working on your final artwork. |
|
Project 2:
Abstract Family Portrait Find the workbook page noted in this video and fill in your notes based on the information. Pause the video when asked to create your own shape, and again when asked to color it. The video will conclude with your assignment that is in your workbook. When that is complete, you will create an abstract representation of your family using just colors and shapes. You must avoid all symbols like hearts or happy faces and work using the information provided here. Our online instruction will go into more detail. |
|
Project 3:
Expressive Self Portrait You will need a mirror or photo of your face to work from as you create an expressive self portrait using the proportions worksheet in your workbook on page 66 & 67. 50% of the grade is based on the proportions being fairly correct, and the other 50% is based on the expressive qualities of your work and how well you used the materials. Start with a sketch before going onto final paper. Practice drawing parts of your face too, like eyes, nose, mouth, etc. Try to be as realistic as you can, but having them in the right place is even more important than how "exact" they are. It is okay, and even encouraged if you can use a ruler. The second video will help you in drawing some of the details of the face. Be sure you watch both videos before sketching and working on your final project. |

Project 4
Comic Book Cover Around page 100 in your workbook is some worksheets to help you come up with an idea for a comic book cover. If you like Japanese Anime art, this is your time to shine! There are many ways you can go with this idea, from serious to silly and everywhere in between. Try a sketch first, there is a blank page in your workbook to try some ideas before you go to final paper. The video here will outline all the expectations for a complete project with some examples from previous student work. |
